Constructive Coping Skills for Anxiety

Most people feel anxious and worry at times. However, some individuals experience excessive anxiety and worry resulting in significant distress in their lives, and may use alcohol or other drugs to decrease or “take the edge off” anxiety. This is also known as “self-medicating”. Feelings of inadequacy can result in feelings of anger, sadness and low self-esteem. Substance abuse serves as a powerful, and at the same time a destructive coping mechanism for avoiding these and other difficult emotions.

If you are ready to make changes in your life:

  1. 1. Get an examination by your physician to ascertain if a medical condition is a factor in your anxiety. Be honest about your substance use as this is necessary for effective treatment.
    2. Go over your diet, sometimes too much caffeine can result in anxiety symptoms.
    3. Learn relaxation techniques and meditation
    4. Try to modify anxiety provoking thoughts and beliefs by practicing positive self-talk, eg “I’m in control of my worry”, or “I’m ready for this challenge”.
    5. Write in a journal
    6. Begin an aerobic exercise program, however first check with your physician.
    7. Become educated on your symptoms of anxiety
    8. Begin to learn new coping skills that do not involve substance use.

All feelings no matter how difficult, can be embraced and considered a gift. Making the decision to stop using substances to self-medicate emotional pain will open a world of opportunity to experience life to the fullest.
